Creative Meditation in Expressive Art

                 Visual meditation is a wonderful method for tapping  into your own imagery and  getting in touch with your Muse.

-->

"We should be taught not to wait for
inspiration to start a thing.

Action always generates inspiration. Inspiration seldom

generates action."

Joy Painting with Her Muse

                    I am having fun painting with my Muse

-->
Process Painting step by step.

  1. Set an intention and make a date to create.
  2. Gather your material and prepare in any way that helps you get ready to create. .
  3. Do some journaling about your thoughts (what is going on and what are you telling yourself about creating? Write it and get it all out? Clear for creativity!
  4. Center through meditation or listening to creative mediation
  5. Prepare surface  wall or table and floor.. Tape a big garbage bag on surface before painting process (messy)
  6. Play music and experiment with using brushes, finger painting and splattering with paint ( Dance to music to loosen up.)
  7. Paint free not thinking or trying to create an image. Allow the paint to paint its self. Listen to the colors and feel the paint . Paint like you are three years old.
  8. Remember it is t he process of self expression and not result or pretty art. You can always use the paper as a surface for collage or mixed media or even create your own greeting cards. Nothing is wasted!
  9. Play and have fun and enjoy being with your creative muse .

Joy Hellman Owner of Joy of Art Studio and Eclectic Multimedia Artist

As an artist I am constantly learning exploring and challenging myself to continue growing and I love the sheer joy of creating! I believe that creating is a magical process. I also enjoy working with other artists because as artists we need the support and reinforcement for our own creative process plus we can always inspire and share ideas with one another.
My media is constantly changing and I enjoy working with all of them. I do not consider myself a watercolorist, but I use it in my mixed media along with fabric, handmade paper and non-art material. I am always experimenting with the possibilities and believe that as an artist you must always be open to spontaneity and the unexpected surprises in the creative process.
I do enjoy traditional art and I work a great deal from photos. I am working on a series from my Paris trip at this time especially paintings from my tour of Auvers and Giverney. I believe that photos can be a wonderful source of reference and inspiration for artwork.
I have favorite artists that have inspired my work including Matisse, Cassett, Monet and Rauschenberg but then that is always changing and depends on what I am working on at the time. I enjoy in-depth study of the masters and their art because I teach art history in my work with homeschool children but I personally enjoy learning about other artists and interpreting their styles and techniques in my own art.
Sometimes my work is more intuitive and when I begin a particular process in a painting pastel or a collage, I really do not know the direction it is taking. I am just exploring and allowing myself the freedom to create without the expectations of the results. Some of my best pieces have been created through this exploratory process.
I believe that the most important thing that artists can do to continue growing and expanding in their creativity is to trust their own process. I also believe that when an artist meets a point of satisfaction with their work, that is when it is time to make a change. When I feel stuck in an area, I change my material, or explore a totally different style or technique. This can usually jolt my creativity and start me into a new direction. Sometimes writing about it or sharing my feelings in my art group gives me the support and encouragement that I need.
I believe for me that the most wonderful thing about being an artist is to participate in the creative process. Even if I were not an artist in the professional sense I would continue to create for it is a great passion and joy in my life.

A person’s license to create is irrevocable and it opens to every corner of daily life. But it is always hard to see that doubt, fear, and indirectness are eternal aspects of the creative path.”

Welcome All Creatives

-->

Hello all of you beautiful Creatives.

     Yes we are going on a wonderful and exciting journey! Are you ready to explore, experiment and just play with no expectations of perfect results? That's what creativity is all about. For those who are timid and afraid of that white page, we will cover it with color and scribbles and write letters to our self, cover it up and collage over that then paint and layer to create a page and that will be your first page in your creative journal... (we are not calling it an art journal but a word that is much easier to believe CREATIVITY. Simply, we are all creatives and therefor all creative … Does everyone believe that? No one is left out ! You are creative... say it five times. I am creative.. I am creative .. I am creative... I am creative... I am creative....You can even repeat it in front of the mirror than take out your journal wash it over with random and pretty colors and after the surface is dry write over and over I am Creative and just have fun with the writing scribble write big tiny overlap do designs on the letters and doodle... Guess what ,you are creating ..Simple right? Meeting the horrible blank page is not as hard as you thought it would be... OK now what do you do next well you can cover over the writing with more color or gesso the page to cover the writing even more … OK lets see ...what about using this process to write about your feelings about creating? What thoughts came up for you?

If you want do another page in your journal about your thoughts . Look through a magazine and find five images that speak to you, tear not cut them out and glue the-images onto the colored surface. Journal or doodle around the images . Well you have done your first two pages and you did have fun right.? That is the main thing. Creativity is not work. It should be a lot of fun or at the least enjoyable and certainly it is better than sitting and watching a boring program just for the sake of doing something. So ,the techniques that you have learned and ones that you can repeat with other themes are:

  1. Creating Layers with washes of color and gesso primer for a surface ( What is gesso)
  2. How to cover and reveal a surface as well do journaling as a part of a surface and layer on a page
  3. How to use a page to randomly word spill your thoughts to get them out as a form of therapy
  4. How to incorporate images for journal prompts
  5. Most important of all how to face and deal with creative anxiety and push through your fear by doing something on a page
    .

How about taking these few techniques and do another page in your journal that is based on a personal theme or journal prompt like...keep it simple ...not too heavy now... Easy does it....

You can even skim through a magazine and allow the images to speak to you tear and glue it or them and free form write ,doodle draw around the images.... Cover and reveal your surface as you want on your page. Or simple look fr colors that you love and use them as a prompt like I feel magenta....

Be sure to share both your creative process as well as your artwork in th e gallery . This as a part of the group sharing and supporting each other. Also if you have a special project technique, idea, or material that you love and would like to share this is also what this group is about. Videos and slide shows
of your work in progress is also greatly appreciated . Feel free to share your Etsy store, website and blog links , whatever in this group. You can also share videos, books , quotations on the creative process .That is why I call it Creative Connection . We are all connected through our love of creativity.

See you October 1st on the page. If you have questions about materials or anything else I am here... Joy
